How to Join a Golf Club in Los Angeles Without a Country Club Membership
Looking for a Los Angeles golf club? Compare social clubs, public-course groups, and private memberships, then find a community that fits your week.

Joining a golf club in Los Angeles can be as simple as finding a group of people who play the same kinds of rounds you do. You do not need to buy access to a private course to have a golf community, maintain a handicap, or enter club tournaments.
The useful first question is what you want membership to change. If your main frustration is finding people to play with, a social club that uses public courses may be a better fit than a membership built around one property.
Understand the three kinds of membership
| Type of club | What you are choosing | What to ask before joining |
|---|---|---|
| A community that plays public courses | Playing partners, organized rounds, and club events | Where do members actually play, and on which days? |
| A club based at a public course | A recurring group connected to one facility | Does the event calendar fit your schedule? |
| A private country club | Membership privileges at a private property | What access, dues, assessments, and guest rules apply? |
Those categories can overlap. A club affiliation that provides a Handicap Index is not automatically a pass for unlimited golf. The SCGA explains its membership routes in its membership FAQ.
Choose the week you want to play
Think about your next four weeks, rather than your ideal golf life. Could you regularly make a weekday morning round? Are weekends your only opening? Would you drive from Santa Monica to Long Beach for a monthly event, but prefer casual rounds near home?
A good club should help you answer those questions before you join. Ask for examples of recent venues and the next few planned outings. “Southern California” covers a large area; the calendar matters more than the label.
Playing style matters too. Some golfers want organized competition. Others want a friendly round, a few familiar faces, and a reason to get out before work. Neither preference requires an impressive score.
What Early Birdies offers
Early Birdies Golf Club is a Los Angeles and Santa Monica community built around morning golf, public courses, and friendly competition. Our membership includes GHIN and SCGA benefits, access to the member community, and opportunities to take part in club rounds and tournaments.
The membership page lists the current annual fee and benefits. Green fees and event registration are separate things to check when you plan a round. Membership does not guarantee a particular public tee time.
Members use the club's Slack community to connect. That is useful if you have been trying to turn the occasional round into a regular habit: you can introduce yourself, explain your availability, and start with a realistic invitation.
Ask these questions before paying
- Where are the next few rounds and tournaments?
- How do members find each other for casual games?
- Can someone new to the club join a round on their own?
- What is included in annual dues, and what is paid per event?
- Is there a handicap requirement for the specific event you want to enter?
- How often can you realistically participate?
You are looking for a match between the club's actual routine and yours. A low annual fee is not good value if every outing conflicts with work.
Start with one round
Read the current tournament calendar, then tell us where and when you like to play. If the schedule fits, joining becomes a practical decision rather than a leap into an unfamiliar golf scene.
